TORONTO, Ont - The Humber Hawks scored two goals in the first seven minutes, stunning the St. Clair Saints on their way to a 6-0 victory.
The Hawks swarmed the Saints early, applying pressure to their defenders. The pressure paid off in the 5th minute when Claudia Piazza picked up a loose ball and struck a rocket into the top right corner of the net.
Sensing an opportunity to add more quickly, the Hawks continued to direct shots towards the Saints net. Emily Tirabassi secured the ball from a scramble to put a shot past the Saints' goalkeeper in the 8th minute for a quick 2-0 lead.
Deflated from the poor start, the Saints were unable to muster much offense in the opening half. Their best opportunity came when Hawks goalkeeper Courtney Nadeau attempted to clear the ball from in tight, only to have her kick ricochet off a Saints attacker and out the end line just feet from the Hawks' goal.
The Hawks added two more goals in the opening half by Giulia Zanardi in the 14th minute and Nicole Lyon just before halftime in the 41st minute.
Another quick strike by Taylor Thompson early in the second half provided the Hawks with a 5-0 before Piazza completed the scoring in the 87th minute.
The win puts the Hawks into the semi-final tomorrow at 7:00pm against the Seneca Sting. The Saints move on to the consolation side of the bracket at 1:00pm against the Cambrian Golden Shield.
Piazza was named Player of the Game for the Hawks while Ravneet Rana took the honours for the Saints.
