TORONTO, Ont - The host Seneca Sting scored early in the match and never let up, dominating the Cambrian Golden Shield 8-0 to advance to the OCAA Championship semi-final.
The Sting, who fell each of the last two seasons in the bronze medal game, looked poised to make a statement early at this year's OCAA Championship.
Coming off their first loss of the season in the final regular season game, the Sting started quickly in the 6th minute. A pass attempt found its way behind the Golden Shield defense and showing a burst of speed, Ellie Hayes got in behind the defense and drove a shot past the Golden Shield goalkeeper to open the scoring.
Controlling the action for the majority of the first half, Alessia Da Silva put the Sting up 2-0 in the 20th minute when she scored her first playoff goal.
The Golden Shield looked to get back in the game coming out of halftime, but it was the Sting who returned to the pitch with the intensity and determination required to compete with the OCAA's elite.
Hayes added her second of the match in the 49th minute before Carley Uddenberg's first of the match in the 65th opened the flood gates for the Sting. Da Silva scored in the 69th minute before Uddenberg notched her second of the match in the 75th minute. Vanessa Gullo completed the scoring with a pair of goals in the 84th and 88th minutes.
The win puts the Sting into the semi-final tomorrow at 7:00pm. The Golden Shield will play tomorrow at 1:00pm in the consolation side of the bracket.
Da Silva was named Player of the Game for the Sting while Jenelle St-Jean took the honours for the Golden Shield.
